In Hinduism, Koormum was the second Avatar of Vishnu, succeeding Matsya and preceding Varaha. Like Matsya this incarnation also occurred in Satya Yuga (Era of Truth). Vishnu in his second incarnation, is in the form of half-man, half tortoise. He is normally shown as having four arms. In the upper two he carries the conch-shell and the wheel while the lower two are in thr protection and the boon giving gestures and is surrounded by lotus. In the popular Indian fable Koormum the tortoise helped the Gods to churn the ocean so that they mac procure ambrosia. Vishnu took the avatar of Koormum and became the base upon which a mountain was rested to churn the ocean. The fable of Koormum is believed to symbolically narrate the the first stages of evolution, as aquatic life harboured the first signs of life on Earth. - See more at: http://suhamarteriors.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=73_75&product_id=109#sthash.xGgXjV9s.dpuf
